Building Tomorrow: How BGE’s Intern Program Shapes the Future of Engineering

At BGE, we’re passionate about shaping the future of engineering by investing in the next generation of talent. BGE’s intern program is a comprehensive, hands-on learning experience designed to prepare students for real-world challenges in engineering and beyond. Our interns aren’t fetching coffee—they’re actively engaged in meaningful work and development opportunities.

The program features book studies, with the latest focusing on emotional intelligence and leadership growth. We also offer business etiquette classes to help interns navigate client interactions professionally and financial wellness classes to promote sound personal financial habits. To provide a well-rounded experience, interns participate in field survey trips, gaining insight into on-site work. Most importantly, each intern is paired with a mentor who provides guidance and support throughout the program.

The program culminates in a BGE graduation, which celebrates the growth and accomplishments of our interns and highlights the value of their experience.

Meet two of our standout interns and learn how they contributed to BGE’s success!

Meet Sharon Karanja

Sharon is a double major in Civil Engineering and Aviation at Texas Southern University. She brought her talents to our Land Development team as part of the Harris County Leadership Internship Program (HCLIP). HCLIP, led by Commissioner Rodney Ellis, connects young adults interested in leadership development, community, and public service to career opportunities. HCLIP is designed for youth aged 18 and over who are pursuing post-secondary opportunities and have an interest in leadership and public service.

Born and raised in Kenya, Sharon’s passion for her home, community, and family shines through in everything she does. Fun fact: In her free time, Sharon loves to fly planes.

 Meet Eric Wright

Meet Eric Wright who was a second-year BGE Public Works intern majoring in Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University. A military veteran, Eric was awarded the esteemed Pat Tilman Scholarship for remarkable military service members, veterans, and spouses.

“My work in the federal government was connected to a very large enterprise, but at BGE, the One Team aspect of the company is something I really enjoyed. The fact that we could lean on other departments, and they could lean on us, and we’re all aiming for the same goal together, is something that I’ve found a kinship to, very similar to the military. I don’t think I’ll be able to find that at other companies.”
